Istanbul - city of culture, history, diversity and cats

Where Europe meets Asia, Istanbul is one of the world's most fascinating cities. A place where centuries of history blend effortlessly with buzzing cafés, rooftop restaurants and vibrant markets, it's perfect for travellers looking for something a little different.

Stand beneath the magnificent Hagia Sophia, marvel at the intricate beauty of the Blue Mosque, and lose yourself in the colourful maze of the Grand Bazaar, home to thousands of shops selling everything from spices and Turkish delights to handmade carpets and jewellery.

Take a cruise along the Bosphorus Strait to watch continents drift by, sample authentic Turkish cuisine in hidden backstreet restaurants, or enjoy a traditional Turkish tea while watching the world go by.

Whether you're looking for a long weekend city break or adding Istanbul onto a wider adventure, you'll discover incredible value for money, unforgettable history and a culture that's unlike anywhere else.

If you like cats you'll be in heaven. They are literally everywhere. We saw a cat sauntering through the blue mosque before curling up on the floor amongst everyone taking in the spectacular building. Let's not be under the impression that these are scruffy and uncared for animals; you'll see many cat houses made by locals for the felines to shelter in and they are definitely a welcome part of this wonderful city.

Holiday Rover Tip: Visit in April-May or September-October for warm weather, fewer crowds and comfortable sightseeing temperatures. We travelled in February and found temperatures to be comfortable; a light jacket was fine.

We stayed in a small hotel in Fatih for 3 nights (b&b) in a family room, flights from Luton, February 2026, cost approx £650 total (2 adults and 2 children, 9 and 13 at time of travel).
